Second Day on iTechStyle Summit 2017!

Dear friends,

As promised last week, let’s have a glance over what happened during the second day of iTechStyle Summit 2017.

So, here’s an overview about the sessions on February 14th.

IoT and Industry 4.0

Isabel Borges / Filipe Cabral Pinto (ALTICE LABS)

IoT shows up even in wearables and textiles now! For example, via wireless communication you can be alerted of the existence of pollution, so that you put a mask to avoid health problems.

There’s protective clothing against fire and radioactivity; and there’s also a kind of technological clothes that measure for instance your vital signs.

In the military area, there’s a lot of investigation around uniforms with IoT technology. The idea is to figure out an “invisible uniform”.

João Gomes (CeNTI)

Research is being requested to create clothing that monitors patient and employee’s vital signs.

For example, the elastic sleeve with sensors that allows to control blood pressure in the arm.

Multifunctional and Digital Processes

Jorgen Lindahl (SPGPRINTS)

SPGPRINTS has created the rotary drum, important for textiles printing.

The traditional textile printing gave way to digital printing.

He gave the example of fast fashion, like Inditex Group, and promoted the following statement: “Print what sells, instead of trying to sell what has been printed”

Giuseppe Begnini (REGGIANI)

The idea is to innovate in “green” processes and technologies of digital printing. The green concept helps saving money and evolving from analogue to digital.

He also promoted the digital pigment and the “offline” pigment process.

In the future, the objective is to improve machinery.

Protective clothing and Innovative Military Textiles

Simão Sousa (Army Officer in Portuguese Armed Forces)

Military Textiles in Portugal have not had a marked evolution. It’s still heavy and it’s worth paying attention to aspects such as mobility and sustainability.

It’s very important to reduce the clothing weight and adopt temperature-adaptable tissues for military clothes. It’s also necessary to use clothing to monitor vital signs and introduce augmented reality techniques into military textiles.

Hugo Alexandre Ferreira (IBBE, FCUL)

Referring to military innovation, the researcher talked about neuroscience and its general importance, particularly within war environment. We need to understand our emotions and capabilities as human beings and explore them.

I hope you have enjoyed this interesting innovative technological textile environment and its relevance as refers our everyday clothing, but also very important as refers healthcare and our comfort.

Kind regards,

Soraya Gadit
